Your Body Feels the Season Change Before You Do. Here’s How to Prepare.

Fall has a lot going for it. The festivals, the foliage, the particular comfort of a warm drink when the air turns cold. But underneath all of that, your body is already responding to something else: less light.

For many people, that shift is more than a minor inconvenience. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that typically arrives in late fall or early winter and lifts in spring. Scientists believe it is connected to reduced sunlight disrupting our internal rhythms in ways that affect mood, energy, and overall mental health.

The most useful thing you can do is prepare before you are already in it. Here are four ways to start.

Try light therapy

One of the most well-supported treatments for SAD is light therapy, also called phototherapy. A lightbox mimics natural sunlight and can help regulate the internal rhythms that shorter days disrupt. Many people find meaningful relief with consistent use. Talk to your doctor before starting to make sure it is the right fit for you.

Shift your wake-up time

With less daylight available, how you use the light that exists matters. Try adjusting your alarm to wake up closer to sunrise so you are catching natural light earlier in the day. Even small shifts in your morning routine can make a real difference as the season changes.

Give yourself things to look forward to

Winter feels long when there is nothing on the horizon. Breaking it up with small intentional plans, a visit with someone you love, a concert, a weekend focused on rest and enjoyment, helps your nervous system know that good things are still coming. You do not need a vacation. You need a few moments that feel like yours.

Work with a therapist

SAD is real, it is treatable, and you do not have to navigate it alone. If you notice the same pattern year after year, fall and winter feeling heavier than they should, working with a therapist before the season hits means you are building a plan while you still have capacity rather than starting from scratch when you are already depleted.

At Holistic Consultation, our somatic-informed clinicians understand that seasonal shifts affect the whole body, not just your mood. We are here year-round, including the hard seasons.
