Back to School Can Look Different for Students with ADHD
For a lot of students, back to school means excitement, new supplies, and reconnecting with friends. For students with ADHD, school can feel a little different too, and that’s worth understanding.
What is Actually Going On
Many students with ADHD are of average to above average intelligence. They often understand the material being taught.
The gap isn’t about understanding. It’s the space between what a student knows and what they’re able to show in a traditional classroom setting.
Their thoughts move fast, often faster than their hands or their words can keep up. That’s simply how their brain is wired, and once that’s understood, everything gets easier to work with.
What Actually Helps
The most powerful thing we can do for a student with ADHD is give them a foundation of genuine support.
That means helping them understand that ADHD shapes how they learn, not what they’re capable of.
It means building self-awareness, teaching them how their brains work, and advocating fiercely for the accommodations they’re entitled to.
It means being a steady, encouraging presence, the kind that helps a student keep going and feel proud of how far they’ve come.
If you are the parent or a student navigating ADHD, you do not have to figure this out alone.
