Gratitude Is Not Just for Thanksgiving. Here’s How to Make It a Daily Practice.

Once a year, we pause to name what we are thankful for. Then November ends and the practice disappears until next year.

It does not have to work that way. And your mental health will thank you if it does not.

A consistent gratitude practice has real, documented benefits. It helps manage stress, improve sleep, build confidence, increase resilience, and strengthen your connection to the people around you. It is also one of the most accessible mental health tools available, requiring no equipment, no appointment, and no more than five to ten minutes a day.

Here are three simple ways to start.

1. Set a reminder

Adding anything new to a routine is hard. Make it as easy as possible by setting a recurring reminder on your phone. Choose a time when you will actually have a few quiet minutes, not during a part of the day when you know you will ignore it. You do not need to spend more than five to ten minutes. You just need to show up for it consistently.

2. Express gratitude to others

When you feel genuinely thankful toward someone, tell them. It does not have to be a big moment. A simple, sincere thank you is enough. This kind of expressed gratitude deepens connection and reminds both of you of what is good between you.

3. Keep a gratitude journal

Having a dedicated place to track what you are thankful for makes the practice easier to sustain. It does not have to be a physical journal. A gratitude app, your notes app, a running list you can access anywhere, all of it counts. The goal is consistency and simplicity, not perfection.

Gratitude does not erase hard things. But it trains your attention to notice what is also true alongside them. That shift, practiced regularly, changes things.
