You Do Not Have to Have It All Figured Out. A Guide to Life Transitions

Graduation season is here. And with it comes a particular kind of pressure that nobody quite prepares you for.

You did the thing. You finished the degree. And now, before the confetti has settled, comes the chorus of well-meaning questions. So what’s next? Any jobs lined up? What are your plans?

These questions are asked with love. They can still send you into a spiral.

Suddenly you are not just answering about a job. You are questioning your path, your purpose, your choices, and whether any of it was the right call. That is a lot to carry on what was supposed to be a celebratory day.

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. And you do not have to have all the answers right now.

What actually helps during a transition

Structure is your friend when everything else feels uncertain. You may not have a full plan yet, but you have the autonomy to start building one. Taking an active role in your next chapter, even in small ways, reduces the feeling of being swept along by circumstances you cannot control.

Lean on your support system. Transitions are not meant to be navigated alone. Reach out to a trusted friend, mentor, counselor, or therapist who can help you think through next steps in a space that feels safe rather than pressured.

Reconnect with your values. The external pressure to secure a job, any job, quickly can drown out the quieter internal voice that knows what you actually want. Before you shoulder all of that pressure, ask where it is really coming from. Some of it is systemic. Not all of it belongs to you.

A few things worth reminding yourself

Your worth is not connected to your job title. You deserve to move toward work that aligns with your values. You do not have to have all the answers right now. You are capable of handling what comes next, even when it does not feel that way.

Shift the question

Instead of asking why is this happening to me, try asking what is this teaching me. Transitions, even hard ones, tend to have something in them worth finding. That reframe will not make the uncertainty disappear. But it can change your relationship to it.
