There’s a Reason You Respond the Way You Do. DBT Can Help.
Have you ever wished you could change the way you react to things? Not just understand why you do what you do, but actually respond differently in the moments that matter most?
That’s exactly what Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, is designed to do.
What is DBT?
DBT is an evidence-based therapy originally developed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, though it has since been shown to help with anxiety, trauma, and a wide range of emotional and relational challenges. It is a type of cognitive behavior therapy, which means it focuses on patterns of thinking and how those patterns shape behavior.
The word dialectical refers to finding the middle ground between two opposing ideas. In DBT, that means learning to hold both acceptance and change at the same time. You can accept yourself exactly as you are and still work toward something different. Both things are true.
What does DBT actually teach you?
DBT is a skills-based approach. You don’t just gain insight. You learn tools you can use in real life, organized around four core areas.
Mindfulness is the foundation. When we’re not connected to the present moment, we get swept up in negative thought patterns and react before we’ve had a chance to think. Mindfulness slows that process down and gives you a pause between what happens and how you respond.
Emotional regulation gives you options for managing intense emotions before they manage you. A big part of this is simply learning to recognize and name what you’re feeling, which sounds simple but makes an enormous difference in feeling less out of control.
Distress tolerance prepares you for the moments when everything feels overwhelming. Rather than doing something impulsive that you’ll regret later, distress tolerance skills give you a way to ride out painful emotions without making things worse.
Interpersonal effectiveness helps you communicate more clearly, maintain relationships you value, and hold your own boundaries without damaging the connection. Because even with the best intentions, we all navigate difficult conversations and challenging people.
Is DBT right for you?
DBT is a strong fit if you find yourself struggling with intense emotions, reactive patterns in relationships, difficulty tolerating distress, or a sense that you keep ending up in the same cycles no matter how hard you try to break them.
Not every modality is right for every person, and that’s okay. The goal is always to find the approach that fits your actual needs.
If you’re curious whether DBT might be a good fit for you, our clinicians at Holistic Consultation are here to help you figure that out.
