The Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy

Have you ever considered walk and talk therapy?

Therapy looks different for everyone. And for some people, the most powerful sessions happen not in an office, but outside, moving through the world side by side with their therapist.

That’s walk and talk therapy, and it might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

What is walk and talk therapy?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Instead of sitting across from your therapist in a room, you walk together for the duration of your session. Same therapeutic relationship, same focus, different setting.

For some people, movement makes it easier to open up. Talking side by side rather than face to face can feel less intense. Being outside can quiet the mental noise enough to actually hear yourself think. If any of that resonates, walk and talk therapy might be a natural fit.

What are the benefits?

Movement does something talk alone can’t always do. Walking helps regulate your nervous system, releases endorphins that improve mood and energy, and creates a mind-body connection that is central to real healing. Many of our clinicians are trained in somatic therapies for exactly this reason: the body holds things the mind hasn’t processed yet, and movement can help unlock that.

Beyond the physical, walk and talk therapy can help you:

  • Get unstuck when you’re not sure what you want to say
  • Practice mindfulness by slowing down and noticing the present moment
  • Feel more connected to your emotions and your body
  • Shift your relationship with movement from chore to coping skill
  • Boost creativity and energy going into the rest of your day

Is it right for you?

Walk and talk therapy isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. It may not be the best fit for certain trauma treatments that require a controlled environment, and privacy outdoors is naturally different than in an office. You also don’t have to choose between walk and talk and traditional sessions. Many clients use it when the mood and weather are right, and come inside when they’re not.
